Four Creighton School District schools, Creighton School, Larry C. Kennedy School, Papago School, and Squaw Peak Traditional Academy, earned the Performing Plus label from Arizona LEARNS. These labels were announced by the Arizona Department of Education on July 29, 2009. Arizona LEARNS is the Arizona Department of Education’s school accountability system which measures school performance based on student achievement, including student performance on the AIMS test. The Arizona Department of Education compiles an annual achievement profile for each public school and publishes that information as a rating system for schools. Excelencia, Gateway, Loma Linda, Machan and Monte Vista schools earned the Performing label.
Improving student achievement has been the focus of the Creighton School District for the past year as the district engaged in an intensive partnership with WestEd and the Ellis Center for Educational Excellence. District and school leaders together with classroom and special area teachers and instructional coaches have focused on updating the curriculum, improving the instructional strategies, incorporating reteaching and enrichment opportunities, and utilizing regular informal and formal assessments – all designed to improve student learning and achievement across the district. “Each one, up one” has been the rallying cry as the district strives to improve each student’s performance, thereby impacting each school’s performance.
