History of the Internet

In 1973, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) initiated a research program to investigate ways to link networks. This was called the Internetting project and the system of networks which emerged from the research was known as the "Internet."

1986 - U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) took over ARPAnet and established NSFnet by connecting 5 universities. Used primarily by scientist and researchers. This provides the major backbone of communication services for the Internet today.
1990’s - commercial community joined in on the Internet and it became a public entity.
