Creighton School has a variety of excellent after school programs that provide students with additional academic support, participation in clubs, and a competitive sports program. These extra-curricular activities provide an environment where students can interact with each other, grow in new areas, and continue developing their skills. Creighton School offers National Junior Honor Society, Student Council, After-School Teacher Tutoring Clubs, City of Phoenix After School Program, Zoo Ambassadors, and Kids Rock.
High-achieving mathematics students in the 7th and 8th grades are offered an Algebra I class, modeled after the high school course. These students are
held to the highest of expectations, completing the same objectives that
high school students study. In the spring, the students have the
opportunity to take the Algebra Qualifying Test offered by the Phoenix Union High School District. This test covers everything from linear modeling, to quadratic equations and polynomial expressions. Students passing this test move into Geometry I for the next school year.
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a motivational reading program that has been in existence for about 17 years. Real books are used, with comprehension quizzes when students finish a book. The AR program allows teachers to test students and determine their independent reading level. Research has shown that repeated reading at the appropriate level accelerates a student’s reading growth. At Creighton all of our students practice reading at school each day. We also encourage and expect them to read at home daily.
For more information about Accelerated Reader and how your child is doing, see your child’s teacher or Valerie Grimes in the library.
Battle of the Books is a national program. Students begin reading from a list of 20 specific books. The goal is to read as many of these books as possible by the end of the school year. There is a competition among schools at the end of the year to determine which team remembers the most from their reading. The program is designed to encourage students to read a variety of books and develop of love of reading. At Creighton School our librarian, Valerie Grimes, leads the program. Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh grade students meet daily to read, discuss, and enjoy twenty different books each year.
