At Monte Vista School, we strive to teach children about healthy living and exercise. In order to lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy choices and clean living habits, children must exercise every day and should have fun in the process. One of the ways we encourage children to exercise is by participating in the Kids Rock Program sponsored by the Phoenix Children \\\'s Hospital.
Students start training for the marathon as early as August by running laps in the morning, during PE class and at home. Students keep a calendar to track the amount of exercise they do. We also encourage parents to run with their children before school and at home. If students reach the training goal, which is an accumulation of 26 miles, they will receive t-shirts and an invitation to participate in the Big Rock & Roll Marathon held in January. The marathon is designed for kids to complete a one-mile run at Tempe Town Lake. Students also participate in a one-mile fun run at Phoenix Zoo in March.
